What We Assess at Certified Homemade

Certified Homemade is a standards-based certification, not a competition and not a pass/fail exam on perfection.

We assess food businesses with one core intention:

Can the public trust this food and the person making it?

To do that fairly, every application is reviewed across the same five areas.

Legal & Food Safety Foundations - what do we look for?

(Non-negotiable)

We confirm that you are operating legally and safely.

We look for:

  • Registration as a food business (or registered and awaiting inspection)
  • A valid Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate
  • A valid Allergy Awareness certificate

This stage is about public safety, not tiers.

If these foundations aren’t in place yet, we’ll guide you, but certification can’t be awarded without them.

Ingredient Transparency

We assess how clearly and honestly you communicate what goes into your food.

We look for:

  • A full ingredient list
  • Clear allergen identification
  • Ingredients that are recognisable and understandable
  • Honest declaration of any bought-in or pre-prepared components

This is not about being “perfect”, it’s about being transparent.

Honesty will never count against you.

How Your Food Is Prepared

(This is the main tier differentiator)

We assess how your food is made day to day.

We look at:

  • Whether food is prepared at home or in a kitchen you control
  • The balance between scratch-made and bought components
  • Your understanding of your own preparation process
  • Consistency across what you offer

This is where Bronze, Silver, and Gold naturally differ - not through judgment, but through depth of preparation and control.

Operations & Consistency

We assess whether your food can be prepared safely and consistently.

We look for:

  • A clear description of your preparation routine
  • Evidence that food safety is maintained day to day
  • Awareness of your capacity and limits
  • Repeatability of what you sell

This helps us understand how confidently we can direct the public to you.

Presentation & Readiness

We assess whether your business is ready to be publicly signposted as Certified Homemade.

We look at:

  • Photos of your food
  • Your kitchen or workspace
  • Packaging, stall, or setup (if applicable)

This is not about polish or branding, it’s about trust, cleanliness, and realism.

All applicants complete the same application.

Certification is awarded as:

  • Bronze – trusted homemade
  • Silver – stronger preparation and consistency
  • Gold – high integrity, craftsmanship, and readiness

Bronze it is already a mark of trust.

Higher levels reflect progression, not pressure.

You do not choose a tier.

We award the highest level you fully meet.
